While this past month was National Mentoring Month, mentoring at our Y is a 24x7 focus. Youth referred to Y mentoring programs have been identified by parents, guardians, school counselors and other adults as needing the steady, predictable presence of a caring and responsible adult in their lives. A purposeful and rewarding way to have a direct and lasting impact on a young person’s life, the Y has a wide array of mentoring programs, all of which provide Y memberships for both the mentor and mentee, including employer-sponsored workplace mentoring.
As is so often the case when we exercise our giving muscles, the benefits are many, as this recent comment from a Y mentor and the stories below attest: “I truly love being a mentor and I appreciate the ongoing support, up-to-date resources and learning opportunities! Thank you — it’s wonderful and I’m so happy to be changing a young person’s life!”
Anton and Christian
Meet mentor Christian and his mentee Anton. Chris is patient, kind, and caring, which has helped this pair stay connected for five years. Anton and Chris have enjoyed exploring first-time activities and experiences together. They often attend events hosted by Big Brothers Big Sisters at the Y and also enjoy playing basketball.
Tommy and Kendal
Mentor Tommy and mentee Kendal have been matched since May of 2019. They have a strong bond and enjoy regular activities. One of their favorite activities is getting together to work out at the Y. Recently, Tommy and Kendal went to a Ravens game, where they had a great time watching their hometown team win!
We are deeply appreciative of all our Y volunteer mentors. If you or anyone you know is interested in this enriching experience, please contact Lisa Cheeseboro, the Y’s Associate Executive Director of Mentoring, at lisacheesboro@ymaryalnd.org. Our waiting list is long, and the rewards are great.
All the best,
