Y on the Fly, Week One

The first week for Y on the Fly was a great one! Last week, the Y on the Fly van popped up at Calvert Street Park & King and Kennedy Park in the Old Goucher’s neighborhood, Belmont Elementary and Joseph Lee Ballfields, Harwood Park, the St. Francis neighborhood and Penn-North Kids Safe Zone, and ended the week at the Weinberg Y in Waverly.

This week’s activities included an intense game of Treasure Hunters (a game about mastering the art of acquiring an ancient artifact before the guards of a rival team take notice), a neighborhood jump rope challenge where neighbors gathered on their porches to watch as kids and Y associates performed double dutch, skip rope and high jumping tricks, and a short-order cooking game about matching colors and filling wacky food orders before time runs out. Other activities this week included hula hooping, relay races, Home Run Derby, ultimate Frisbee, basketball and flag football. We ended the week with a 30-person game of sharks and minnows at the Weinberg Y in Waverly!

Afterward, our young volunteer chefs came together to fix rolled oatmeal bites complete with bananas, raisins and marmalade!
