Spring is in the air! Spring cleaning isn’t just for getting up dust bunnies. Spring cleaning can do wonders for your pantry, your fridge, your freezer and ultimately your diet and nutrition!
Start by clearing your countertops and/or dining table- you’re going to need a place to temporarily put things.
Pantry- Empty it. ALL of it.
- Throw away anything that is out of date.
- Throw away dented or bulging can goods.
- Throw away any spices that have been opened over 1 year. (I like to use a sharpie to label spices with the date opened for this very purpose)
- While you’re at it, throw away cookies, chocolate, chips and any other vices.
- Organize remaining items in a way that makes sense for you- likelihood of use, size, etc.
- Store closest to expiration products to the front and newer products to the back.
- Take inventory of what is present and what you’ll need to replace.
- Add whole grains, beans, nuts, and rice.
Fridge- Empty it. ALL of it.
- Throw away anything that is out of date, looks like a science experiment, or no longer liked by your household.
- Wipe down side walls and shelves with warm soapy water. Dry with clean towels.
- Restock the fridge with oldest items to the front and freshest items to the back.
- Take inventory of what is present and what you’ll need to replace.
- Add fresh fruits, vegetables, and low fat dairy.
Freezer- I’m sure you’ve gotten the hang of this, but go ahead and empty it. ALL of it.
- Throw away anything that is out of date.
Throw away anything that has been there more than 1 year.
- (I like to label these items with a sharpie too)
- Throw away anything your family no longer likes or eats.
- Throw away any vegetables or meats in high sodium sauces or seasonings.
- Restock the freezer with newest products to the back and oldest products to the front.
- Take inventory of what is present and what you’ll need to replace.
- Add plain vegetables, fruits, and lean meats like chicken and fish.
This should leave you feeling fresher, lighter, and ready for a healthy spring and summer!
