Project You: Christine Bond's Story

In September 2017, with a weight loss goal and the aim at taking charge of her health, Christine Bond joined the Ward Y in Abingdon. On her own, she lost 10lbs, but quickly felt as though she had reached a plateau. Last year, she participated in the 12-week Project You program. Over the course of 12 weeks, Christine lost 12lbs and made connections which turned into friends. Says Christine, "I just felt like everyone was there for each other. It really helped keep me motivated and accountable."

What makes Christine’s experience unique is that she suffers from hemophilia. Hemophilia is an inherited bleeding disorder in which blood does not clot correctly. This disease is incurable, and rare for women –they are simply identified as carriers of the disease, despite living with the same symptoms as men diagnosed with the disease. Because the disease leads to bleeding within joints, which can cause significant pain and swelling in ankles, elbows and knees, exercise is often difficult.

Working with program leader and Y Personal Trainer, Kelly Keh, Christine was able to identify exercises compatible with her hemophilia and modifications that will keep her active for life. Though she still has 20lbs to reach her goal weight, Christine feels confident in her ability to do it. Says Christine, "I really feel like I learned so much in Project You. I know I can go forward on my own now and reach my goals!"
