Monday Mission Update: Y Camp

August 19, 2019

The parent letter below to Suzanne Green at the Walter and Betty Ward Y in Abingdon speaks for itself and says everything anyone needs to know about what it means to do Y work. Take a look.

Good Morning Suzanne,

I have two children attending camp this summer.

The counselors this summer, and the director for the camp, have been absolutely, hands down phenomenal. My son had a very hard time the first week and a half, and the counselor(s), made every effort to show compassion and help him through the day. There is another counselor, I don’t know his name, but a gentleman with glasses, who also offered suggestions to help through the day. They also communicate with me on how the day goes, and if he gets upset what they did to try and help him.

This morning, we literally had to peel my daughter off of me while she was crying because she wanted to stay with me. I’m okay, because I know they are in great hands and I’m sure she was fine shortly after I left.

The level of compassion, communication, and professionalism of these counselors is outstanding. The Y, and the families who have children attending camp, are so very lucky to have these counselors. I truly hope in some way the counselors mentioned can be recognized for this, because it certainly means the world to me knowing that the two most precious treasures in my life are so well taken care of while I have to work.

I truly commend the Y for choosing such a phenomenal group of men and women for this camp!

Have a fantastic day!

Kelly

A big thank you goes out to Y camp counselors Claire Mottley, Erin Novak, Shakira Henderson and Michael Schlaud, and to the Ward Y Camp Director, William Cameron. You all wonderfully exemplify the Y’s values and our mission in action. You’ve left a lasting imprint on this family and all the children you are working with this summer. Some of them, will remember you and the special summer you made forever.

Many thanks as well to Kelly for taking the time to write this kind note and for allowing us the opportunity to help make this summer just a little bit better for you and your family.

All the best,

John
