Y ASSOCIATE OPPORTUNITIES
Register Now! The Y's DEI Speaker Series

Dr. Nichols, a specialist in organizational development, will discuss the concept of cultural competence in leadership and help Y associates understand how they may culturally differ from others. All Y associates are welcome to attend. Click below to register today!
We Want to Hear From You About What YOU Want To Hear From Us!

Communication in an organization as large and complex as the Y is always a challenge. We know you are all busy people and we want to make communication easy and on your terms. One of the ways we are considering doing that is through a series of Y associate podcasts on a variety of topics of interest to you and relevant to your work.
Please take a minute to fill out the survey below (really, we promise it's very short!). It will help assure that if a Y podcast series is created, it will meet your needs, interests and time.
Thank you in advance for your help. We will share the results and plans in an upcoming edition of Us!

COMMUNITY COMMENTS

The good work you do doesn't go unnoticed. Enjoy reading these real comments from our Y community and soak in the praise!
Beth, The Dancel Y in Ellicott City
"I have been a member of the Y for years but only used it sporadically, due to work and the distance from my home. Then in July 2021. I retired and a friend said you should come to Cardio Dance with Janet. Wow!! Janet's class is so much fun and I have met so many Wonderful people! For a year now, I have been dancing in the mornings at least 4 days a week. It has helped me so much with my transition from work to retirement while I'm still in the process of trying to figure out what I want to do with the rest of my life. I'll get there eventually, in the meanwhile I'll continue to dance and hopefully take some other classes at the Y along the way."
Shye'La, Y Head Start in Baltimore City - Kirk Site
“The program is very good and helpful. My son has progressed so much and the teachers are excellent. I love it!"
Tilghman, Y Camp Whippoorwill
"My son loved Camp Whippoorwill. He participated in 2 weeks at camp. He was so happy with the variety of activities, daily water experiences, and the themes. He connected with the counselors, who made a sincere effort to get to know all the kids and I felt confident in the secure pick-up process. It was very hot at camp, but fluids were encouraged and available all day. He came home dirtier than I have ever seen him, which is proof of a fun camp experience! He is already looking forward to camp again next summer!"
Juliette, Y Before & Afterschool Enrichment - Dublin Elementary
“We love Cheryl! My girls never want to leave because of Cheryl. They have never had so much fun in their lives!"

OUR WORK TOGETHER
Dear Colleagues,
With Labor Day upon us, I want to use this opportunity to celebrate each and every Y associate for all that you do for our community. Every day, I see countless examples of Y work in action and the tremendous impact we have on the families, youth and individuals we serve. While we were each drawn to work for the Y for a wide range of reasons, it’s quite obvious that what motivates each of us to stay goes well beyond a paycheck (although we all need that too).
What I have learned over the years is that what distinguishes and unifies Y associates across all areas of focus and geography is quite simply the drive to help others and to improve the quality of life for our community.
Think of it. In today’s fractured world, the Y is really one of the few institutions left in which the entirety of the community, including people of all faiths, races, backgrounds and income levels, come together on common ground and in common purpose. In my experience, spaces and experiences that draw us to engage with others who are not exactly like us are both the most compelling and the most necessary.
Without a doubt, life’s challenges are often complex and exceedingly difficult to solve. Community building is a straightforward, simple and effective antidote to many of our social ills. When we are at our best, the Y builds community with intentionality, expertise and a deep amount of compassion and empathy. As we look to the future, I believe that is the bedrock of our work.
Thanks for all you do. I hope everyone has a great Labor Day weekend. A special shout-out goes to Y family center associates for keeping our doors open Monday morning in service of others.
All the best,

John Hoey
