COMMUNITY COMMENTS

Y Community Comments

The good work you do doesn't go unnoticed. Enjoy reading these real comments from our Y community and soak in the praise!

Natalie, Y Before & After School Enrichment - Overlook Elementary
"I was super nervous about after care because it seemed like such a long time for my daughter to be there. However, she loves it! She gets disappointed when I pick her up early. The teachers are wonderful and know my daughter and what she likes. I like that I feel safe having her there and I love that they make it so fun and engaging for her. I'm incredibly thankful for the after care program and how well they take care of my daughter!"

Anne, The Orokawa Y in Towson
“We love the Orokowa Y and recommend it to all our friends in the area! The associates are friendly, Stay & Play is great, the facility is always clean. We always feel a real sense of community here."

Shikerra, Y School Partnerships - Afterschool at Moravia Park
"I love the interaction between the associates and the kids. I greatly appreciate the program and the care that my child receives."

Miriam, The Sherman Early Childhood Center at Weinberg
“The Y has been an awesome program for our 4.5-year-old over the last two years. She has had great teachers, an awesome play environment and learned so much. Thank you!"

OUR WORK TOGETHER

Dear Colleagues,

By now you likely received information on our new strategic plan, called All in on Community, in your mailbox at home. I encourage you to read it. It’s the roadmap for our work together over the next several years and you will need to be knowledgeable about it in order to help those we serve understand all the changes which are right around the corner. Fundamentally, All in on Community compels a focus on Y membership as our organizing purpose. The reason for this is that research shows, and the Y has long known, that belonging to a supportive, caring network of people in which everyone belongs and feels valued, is more than just a “nice-to-have.” It’s actually essential to good health and well-being. That’s why we’re doubling down on Y membership for all as the unifying hub of Y community life.

Beginning January 1, 2023, everyone who engages with the Y, whether through our many early childhood, school-based youth programs, mentoring, swim lessons, camp, and more, will all be Y members, with full access to our Y family centers and all the many benefits which come with that. To learn more about how these changes will affect those you serve, visit our website at YMARYLAND.ORG/YCOMMUNITY. Questions may be submitted at the bottom of that page.

In my career, which has spanned a number of organizations across multiple industries, I’ve been through a lot of organizational change, including here at the Y. Change can be unsettling, but what’s more unsettling is clinging to the status quo as the world and the community continuously changes. Change is a necessary precursor to recovery and growth. As President John F. Kennedy said, “Change is the law of life, and those who look only to the past and present are certain to miss the future.”

The future for us is an organization that can more intentionally deliver a membership experience that is essential in people’s lives. It’s an organization in which all we do leads to membership in a Y community that is more diverse, connected and healthier; in which inclusion and belonging are an essential part of everyday life at the Y and not simply left to hit or miss moments. This strategy, which isn’t a radical departure but a shift in how we think about our work, will be driven by Y associates ready to embrace change and to channel their energy into creating a new and stronger future for all who walk through our doors and for our association as a whole. Thank you for all you do and will do to make this vision a reality.

All the best,

John Hoey
