GOOD VIBES

YOUNG MARINES HONOREE

BethLentz

Our very own Beth Lentz was honored as the Young Marine MD Volunteer of the Year! The award reads, "During her time as an adult volunteer, she has impacted hundreds of young Marines across the program in a very meaningful way during drill, unit encampments, Regimental events and National Academy.  Ms. Lentz works behind the scenes, preferring the spotlight to be on others."

Please join colleague Melanie Greenhill (thanks for sharing) and all of us, in congratulating Beth on her volunteer achievement!

COMMUNITY COMMENTS

Y Community Comments

The good work you do doesn't go unnoticed. Enjoy reading these real comments from our Y community and soak in the praise!

Xavier, Y Chipmunks Preschool
"The teachers are wonderful and seem to really direct everything towards the student’s personal level of needs. My son loves going to school. My younger son will join the Chipmunks next year. We are very pleased with our experience so far."

Ronique, Swim Lessons at the Dancel Y in Ellicott City
“This is my 4-year-old's first experience with swimming lessons. Ms. Brianna is very patient with the littles in the Beginners class that are getting acclimated with the water. Ms. Brianna has made his first experience a GREAT one! He loves going to class and this is only the second week!"

Hailey, Y Before & After School Enrichment - Rippling Woods Elementary
"I am so appreciative of the before and after care at Rippling Woods elementary. Emilee and TJ are absolutely phenomenal. Not only with the students but with the parents as well. TJ is always keeping us up to date. I feel completely comfortable leaving my daughter in their care. I will be sad if either of them ever leave!"

Le'Nae, Y Early Head Start - Home-based
“I want to say that the Y Head Start program is very great. Not only does your toddler get the experience needed to prepare them for elementary school, some also have an infant's program where your baby will begin to prepare for Head Start. There are so many other benefits and resources that the centers provide and the parents are heavily involved and included in the program."

OUR WORK TOGETHER

Dear Colleagues,

Happy Veterans Day everyone!

Our annual Y Turkey Trot Charity 5K is the only fundraising event we do every year, and it’s also the best opportunity we have to close the year with a bang in terms of our ability to provide Open Doors support for families and individuals who need help to keep the Y in their lives. And, of course, it’s also a phenomenal example of community building in action.

As an organization, this is an all hands-on-deck moment for all of our associates and volunteers. As of last week, we were trending ahead last year on all measures, which is wonderful! It’s also a sign we have momentum on our side and can achieve this year’s goals (which are higher than last year).

With a mere two weeks to go, we’ve raised roughly 67% of our $1.1 million goal. That number includes 7,282 registrations (and growing every single day). While this number sounds great, increasing the number of members and participants who register for Turkey Trot is a huge imperative (the goal is 14,000, which is definitely achievable as most registrations come in the last two weeks). I challenge every Y associate to bring in at least five new runners (walkers or strollers!) in the next two weeks. If you’ve ever participated yourself, you know how much fun it is and that makes the “ask” easy.

Just this week, Danny Defebo, Senior Executive Director of Property, secured a new Turkey Trot Sponsor for $10,000, on top of many other sponsorships he’s brought in for the cause! I assure you, getting Turkey Trot sponsors is nowhere in Danny’s job description, but Danny fully embraces the idea that fundraising to help others is a part of everyone’s responsibility at the Y. Hats off to Danny and to all Y associates who understand and support the vital connection between a healthy Y and a healthy community. It’s really quite simple; the more we raise, the more people we can help.

More information on our one and only fundraising event can be found at Y Turkey Trot Charity 5K.

All the best,

John Hoey

ORGANIZATION ANNOUNCEMENT

Yesterday a restructuring of part of our operations and shared services functions was announced. This change is occurring as a result of several factors, including the need to better align our structure with our new strategic plan, the fact that our revenues have not yet returned to the levels that we had anticipated, and the imperative that we return to a sustainable financial condition.

Effective immediately, our Y Family Centers will move to a more centralized model for program/service development and delivery as well as for membership sales. This change is designed to improve the consistency of the member experience while also making us more efficient in the areas of hiring and deploying associates, the design, roll-out and scheduling of programs, and our effectiveness in closing new member sales.

Please read the full announcement to learn which areas are impacted by this restructuring.
