UNIVERSAL ASSOCIATE?
Universal Associate

As witnessed in our recent Y Associate Town Hall, there's been a lot of discussion lately around our new "Universal Associate" position. A Universal Associate is a Y family center associate who is trained to support a broad range of Y family center operational needs, including member services, youth development, swim/lifeguard programs, fitness, and more.

This new position is changing the game in how we approach hiring and placing leaders in our Y family centers. The only problem is we really don't like the title, Universal Associate.

Help us decide on a new title! Click below to submit your suggestion. If your title is selected, you will receive a fun token of our appreciation!

Y Community Comments

The good work you do doesn't go unnoticed. Enjoy reading these real comments from our Y community and soak in the praise!

Stephanie, The Orokawa Y in Towson
“The Y is a great place for families! We belonged to Merritt gyms before having kids. The Y costs the same for the whole family and there are so many great amenities for the kids. We are very excited for summer camp!"

Ronan, Y Before & After School Enrichment - Windsor Farm Elementary
“The people are kind, the scheduling is flexible, and associates work with our schedule when it changes. My son loves it and is meeting other kids outside his age group and class. The sports mix program was also very beneficial for him in the fall."

Keng, Y Head Start in Baltimore City - Elgin Site
"I love everything about this site. The teachers are the best. The place is clean and they teach our children so much 🙂. This is my son's second year here. He looks forward to going to school everyday. It has been a wonderful experience."

Ranunculus, The Sherman Early Childhood Center
"Caring, engaged, professional teachers who take such great care of our kiddo."

OUR WORK TOGETHER

Dear Colleagues,

It’s hard to believe that it’s already the middle of March. Before we blink, a quarter of 2023 will be over. In what I fully understand is a very hectic time for all Y associates, I want to congratulate everyone for the incredible momentum that we are now feeling across the organization. It’s all because of all of you.

In February of 2021, things bottomed out for us in terms of membership. We had lost half (50%) of our membership units since the pandemic had started and much of what we do was shuttered eleven months prior. Public schools were closed, we were assisting kids and their families with virtual learning, and most of our youth development work, while active, was dramatically altered and incredibly challenged. Financially, well, things were very tough.

Fast forward to today, we still face financial challenges, but the momentum is real. Across all of our work, the arrows are up in terms of enrollment, participation and financial recovery. Our youth development programs are looking a lot more like they did prior to COVID, our school-based work has expanded, and membership growth since the beginning of the year is, frankly, unprecedented. We are now at over 81% of pre-COVID membership levels, with a great March in progress. While it’s my job to continue to focus on our financial recovery, it’s your role as a Y associate to focus on those we serve and to enjoy the happiness that brings both them and you.

As we stand here in mid-March, we are a changed community, and so for us to recover both financially and organizationally, we must be a changed Y. Our new strategic plan, “All In On Community,” compels us to work and think differently, recognizing that everything we do should lead to membership in a Y community that is diverse, inclusive, healthy, and that provides a deep sense of belonging. We live in an era of increased loneliness, isolation and polarization, which screams for community building as the antidote, something the Y is uniquely qualified to provide. When people are brought together with intentionality in an atmosphere of health, shared values and shared humanity, everyone benefits: kids, seniors, families, people from every walk of life, and communities as a whole.

Kudos to everyone here at our Y, across all of our points of community-building. The changes we are working ourselves through are indeed challenging, but they’re producing results that accrue to the benefit our community, our Y, and all of our associates.

All the best,

John Hoey
