A Career Day Wish Come True
At the Y in Pasadena, there's a very special member named Charlie. Charlie loves lifeguards, especially the lifeguards at his Y family center. For his career day at school, his mom reached out and asked if there was any way we could help him go to career day as his hero? Of course we did! Right down to the (retired) walkie and name tag. You're looking good, Charlie!

"The Y is a family event. There's something for everyone!"
Tatianna, Y Camp Hashawha
“My daughter made new friends that she is still in touch with even after the camp ended. It took her one day or so to adjust while there and then she had a great time. She enjoyed the activities and stated that to her surprise the food was good, except for one off night - LOL!"
Corbin, Y Before & After School Enrichment at North Bend Elementary
"We have never used the Y for an after school program. I am very happy with the level of care and attention the team provided. We're looking forward to next year. We signed up for the before and after school program this time."

OUR WORK TOGETHER
Dear Colleagues,
Over my years working for and leading organizations that serve the public at large, I have seen a lot of time and money spent trying to understand what the consumer wants and why. There are a lot of consultants who’ve made an excellent living doing that work. While I firmly believe in using objective analytical tools in trying to understand how to develop a service that meets the needs of a customer, I also believe that, in the end, it actually comes down to being really good at listening. Listening is actually very hard, particularly in our culture, but it’s also essential in the work we all do here at the Y.
The following is a cross-section of quotes coming from Listen360, our daily customer satisfaction survey, which is telling us something both very simple and very powerful.
“The Y provides all of the services I am looking for, but for a fraction of the price. I always feel welcomed during my visits and feel comfortable working out.”
“The Y is the place I go to meet new friends and have fun working out with them. The Everfit, Body Sculpt, and Urban Line Dance classes I take are well-organized and energizing. People at the Y are friendly and welcoming; nobody needs to worry about being judged. All classes offer alternative exercises for all levels of fitness. Come to the Y because it's a happy place (where you also get fit).”
“This was my sons’ first sleepaway camp. They had such a great time. They loved all of the activities, spoke highly of all of the counselors, and made so many friends! We definitely plan to send them back next year! One of my sons wants to try the horseback riding camp next time. It was very organized, the camp counselors were enthusiastic, and seemed happy to be there. This helped us feel like we were leaving them in good hands.”
“The facility is wonderful, the associates are friendly and inviting and the environment encourages activity and exploration for children.”
Notice what these folks are all telling us that they care about: friendliness, accessibility, comfort and community. These qualities are core to the Y’s mission, to all of the work we do in the community, and to basic human existence.
Think about it. Every day we’re helping children and adults make friends, learn, grow, feel welcomed and supported. That’s otherwise known as building community, and that is really what all of our jobs are all about.
In a world in which things sometimes feel out of control and very frustrating, building human connections and community is an incredibly powerful way to make a living.
All the best,

John Hoey

SAD NEWS
OUR FRIEND, LAVAR MILES
We are saddened to share the loss of Mr. Lavar Miles, a Rock Wall associate at the Weinberg Y in Waverly Y Family Center.
Lavar passed away at home on Wednesday, July 20. He and his family joined the Y in 2017 and Lavar deepened his engagement with the Y by joining the Weinberg Y Family Center associate team this summer, alongside his son Damari. They worked together as the primary Belayers for summer camp.
Lavar was a valued member of the Y team and will be missed for his enthusiasm and patience with our campers and members. Our hearts and prayers are with his family.
