Y ASSOCIATE OPPORTUNITIES

Unique Opportunity for High School Students

Changemakers Project

We have a wonderful opportunity that can be shared with high school youth development families as well as your own family and friends!

High school students in grades 9-12 are invited to participate in the Y Changemakers Project, a unique opportunity for teens to propose a project that addresses a critical issue or need in their community.

Students must register and submit their Changemakers Project proposal by March 20. Through a selection process, students may have an opportunity to present their project at a youth conference in Washington, DC in June and potentially win $5,000 in funding to make their project a reality!

COMMUNITY COMMENTS

Y Community Comments

The good work you do doesn't go unnoticed. Enjoy reading these real comments from our Y community and soak in the praise!

Beth, Y Mentoring
"I love the Big Brother Big Sister at the Y program. I know I am making a difference in my little's life. It has been extremely rewarding and I feel like this is what I was meant to do."

William, Before & After School Enrichment, Windsor Farms Elementary
“Ms. Mary Lou is like having family care for your child. She’s incredibly passionate and goes above and beyond to help the children learn and grow. She excels at knowing their passions and keeping them engaged. She is a true educator, an asset to the organization, and we are lucky to have her at our location!"

Scout, Y Preschool at Weinberg
“Our daughter has been at the Y twice… once as a 2-y-o (pre-pandemic) and again 18 months later. Both times, we’ve been extremely happy with her care. Her teachers look out for her and help her develop, and she comes home each day with a smile and plenty to talk about. We’re already looking forward to sending our son to the Y, too. A great preschool."

Holly, The Y in Pasadena
“I like the sense of community at the Y. We love the children's programs especially the Fit-n-Fun class and Parents' Night Out. My daughters love the pool!”

OUR WORK TOGETHER

Dear Colleagues,

In my role as CEO, one of the most important issues I always think about and work on with our senior leadership team is talent management. The Y is only as good as the people who work here. We are, quite obviously, in the “business” of engaging the community to help families and people from all walks of life improve their sense of well-being. Great programs, facilities and resources certainly contribute mightily to that, but only great people make that promise come to life.

I want to highlight an idea that came out of a recent discussion related to developing people. Oftentimes, people think that professional development has to involve a training program, or an experience that someone charges a lot of money for. While those types of development opportunities can be helpful, I’ve found that one of the most compelling development experiences available to all of us is often staring us right in the face – the wisdom of some of our more experienced Y associates and leaders.

We are fortunate to have so many talented “veteran” folks working for us – some of whom are in leadership roles here, and many of whom worked in other organizations and fields before coming to the Y. They represent an enormously valuable resource if we would only tap into it: years of experience, insight and perspective that Y associates earlier in their careers can gain great benefit from.

Earlier in my career, I sought out informal mentors in the organizations I worked in and was able to gain an enormous amount of insight into the business I was working in, on mistakes others made that I didn’t want to replicate, and on how to navigate challenges that I hadn’t faced but that others had. I remember those learning experiences more than I remember any training program I’ve ever attended.

So, as we all navigate the challenges of leading and/or succeeding in 2022, I suggest that there is an awful lot of wisdom and help all around us. You’d be surprised what you can learn from others who have had more years and more experiences in the workplace than you. Sometimes just grabbing a cup of coffee, lunch or simply a commitment to spend time together on a semi-regular basis can be what untangles some of the biggest challenges any of us face. You might be surprised how much your colleagues will be appreciative of your interest and will be willing to help.

All the best,
