GOOD VIBES

Celebrating Karen Farley!

Karen Farley

Last week at the Y Leadership Retreat, we celebrated many extraordinary associates for both length of service and demonstration of our cultural competencies and values. Among those honored was Karen Farley, who after 45 years of excellent service to the Y, could have well been a winner in every category awarded. The Membership Director at the Hill Y in Westminster, her "home away from home" over the last 45 years, Karen's colleagues gush with praise for her extraordinary dedication and unstoppable can-do attitude.

Here are some excerpts:

"It's hard to think Karen has worked for the Y for 45 years! I always kid Karen that 'she must have come with the building!' Her dedication to serve, her humanity to help, and her ears to listen first are just a few qualities that make her such a rich individual and colleague."

"I've Known Karen since 2002 when I started at Hill. She welcomed me with open arms. She's the face of the Y for 45 years in Carroll County."

"Congratulations Karen!  You are an amazing light in this organization that has been burning brightly for the last 45 years!"

"Farley is the Y! She is one of the most dedicated people I know who literally lives and breathes our Mission. Karen is always there for the front desk. Members adore her and know she will always follow through."

"Karen goes above and beyond to make associates and members happy. She works late most days and even gets in a bodypump class once in a while for her own well-being!"

"It has been a pleasure working with Karen for the last 16 years. Her dedication to the Y, specifically the Hill Y in Westminster, is something we all strive to match."

"Since the day I started, Karen has always made me feel like I was part of the team. She has been my shoulder to cry on, my listening ear, and my voice of reason many times throughout the years. Her big heart and ability to see all sides of a story have made her an incredible asset to our center and we're lucky to have her. Here's to 45 more years!"

We will second the motion. Here's to 45 more. Thank you Karen! ❤️

OUR WORK TOGETHER

Dear Colleagues,

Last week about 200 Y leaders across our organization gathered for a half-day session to discuss our new strategic plan and celebrate the extraordinary accomplishments and service of so many of those associates. The longest tenured person recognized was the incomparable Karen Farley, Membership Director at the Hill Y in Westminster, who celebrated 45 years of Y service! We also recognized the incredible Rachel Martin, HR Specialist, who is bravely battling ALS with a spirit that is inspiring to all, and we did that with the Forest Park High School Marching Band, a Y Community School!

Additionally, the following associates were selected by their colleagues for a variety of awards:

  • Advancing Our Mission & Cause - Ashley Antonsen (Community School Director, Walter P. Carter Elementary/ Middle School) and Tawanda Ford (Membership Operations Manager, The Y Swim Center in Randallstown)
  • Building Relationships - Zalanka Jones (Camp & Family Experience Director, The Greater Annapolis Y in Arnold) and Darnell Eaddy (VP, Strategic Partnerships and Civic Engagement)
  • Leading Operations - Shannon Clifton (Associate Executive Director, Head Start Education Services) and Ameka Smith (Executive Director, Early Childhood Education)
  • Developing & Inspiring People - Shannon Martin (Membership Director, The Greater Annapolis Y in Arnold) and Rachel Walsh (Program Director, Before and After School Enrichment)
  • Rising Star Award - Derrek Cole (Associate Executive Director, School Partnerships) and Casey Reidpath (Executive Director, Lead Marketing and Optimization)
  • Lynn Quinney Award (given to an associate who embodies the qualities held by our colleague Lynn Quinney, who succumbed to cancer in 2012) - Debra Barrett (Senior Executive Director, Head Start)

Several awards recognized associate teams that have made tremendous progress happen this year, including the Y’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Steering Committee, the Strategic Planning Workgroup, the Y Head Start team, the Y Before & After School Enrichment team, the team at the Y Swim Center in Randallstown, and the Gallup team.

Congratulations to all the winners and to all the many more wonderful Y leaders they represent and work with. As with any awards, we know that for every person selected for special recognition, there are many more who are equally deserving and have either been winners in the past or will be winners in the future.

Aside from the fun of award-giving, we dove into our new strategic plan, Vision 2025: All in on Community. It is informed by a set of guiding principles set by our Board of Directors, followed by months of research and in-depth discussions with more than 200 associates, volunteers, members, program participants, and other stakeholders. It responds to some of the major challenges facing our community today and intentionally leverages our assets (human, programmatic and physical) to try to address these issues, with a clear focus on building a more inclusive and connected Central Maryland community in which Y membership creates a sense of belonging, engagement, empathy, health, and well-being for all.

Please keep an eye on your inbox and actual mailbox (remember those?) and various other communications channels over the next several weeks to learn more about what this plan actually means to you and all of us.

It’s an exciting time to be a part of the Y. We certainly have our challenges, but I am confident that with the abundance of talent and dedication that is so apparent throughout our Y that we will continue to meet the needs of our community with compassion and accountability to our mission.

All the best,

John Hoey
