COMMUNITY COMMENTS

The good work you do doesn't go unnoticed. Enjoy reading these real comments from our Y community and soak in the praise!
Ruth, The Orokawa Y in Towson
"I love the cleanliness at this Y. The associates are friendly and the atmosphere feels positive. I always leave feeling energized!"
Nora, Y Before & After School Enrichment, Church Creek Elementary
“The teachers are great and my daughter is able to get her homework done and get help if needed. This helps me a great deal!"
Amari, Y Head Start in Baltimore City, Hilton Site
"The Y Head Start Center (Hilton site) has given my son the start he needed to enter Kindergarten prepared. I am confident that my son will thrive in "big people school" as he calls it. Ms. Thompson made me feel safe and secure about sending my child back into school with the pandemic going on. I was pleased with the class size and that the kids are in the same classroom with each other for lunch. Ms. Thompson even went out of her way to FaceTime me before school was even in session to allow me to see the layout/setup of the classroom, I was sold after that. I loved that each child had their own everything with their name on their belongings."
Crystal, Water Exercise at the Y Swim Center in Randallstown
“I have attended only one water aerobics class at this location, but Vella is amazing! She is energetic and fun which makes the experience quite enjoyable. I will be attending my second class this evening and I am looking forward to it!"

OUR WORK TOGETHER
Dear Colleagues,
While John is getting some needed R&R with his family, I have the pleasure of celebrating some amazing accomplishments taking place all across our association. There is a LOT going on, and I can’t hope to cover everything, but I wanted to share some of the exciting things that are happening:
- As of June 1st, we have 15,530 camper weeks enrolled (and counting), representing 97% of our budgeted goal, and 95% of our stretch goal. Comparing this to May 31st of 2021, we remain ahead of pace by 1,198 camper weeks! As strong as these numbers are, it’s the human story behind them that really matters. We can all take pride in knowing that thousands of children in our community will have the kind of safe, fun and happy summer that all children deserve and that is so badly needed, especially right now. Many of these children will be afforded this opportunity because of the many generous donors to our Send a Kid to Camp campaign, which is just inches away from meeting its 2022 goal.
- Speaking of taking pride, I am so pleased to report that a group of Y associates participated in the annual Pride parade in Annapolis this past weekend. It was a beautiful day with huge crowds attending the parade and festival, and we’re thankful for the associates and friends who proudly displayed the Y’s commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion in all its forms.
- I am also delighted to share that we are getting ready to open our second Y food pantry, joining the Michelle Becote-Jackson Fresh Mart at the Y in Druid Hill. This one will operate out of the Y in Pasadena and will reinforce our commitment to addressing food insecurity in our region. We expect to open it to customers in the next few weeks.
- Juneteenth is right around the corner, and we will be celebrating this holiday in many locations around our region. For those who are available, please join us for festivities planned at the Y Swim Center in Randallstown this Saturday from noon-3pm, including delicious food, activities for kids, music, dancing, guest speakers, contests, and more!
- Responding to a market survey in which families expressed concerns over rising prices, we launched a brand new membership campaign which offers Y membership absolutely free for the entire month of June. Sales are extremely strong through the first part of the month, so we clearly have hit a nerve in a good way!
- Construction is complete, and the final touches are underway to open our new Sherman Early Childhood Center on the campus of the Weinberg Y in Waverly. Enrollment will begin shortly, offering more spaces for young children in this facility, which will serve those in our Y Head Start and Preschool programs. An opening event is being planned now. Stay tuned! This will be followed by additional renovation in the Weinberg Y, including conversion of the former early childhood space to expand the fitness floor, upgrading locker rooms, and more.
- Thirty Y youth leaders from our newly formed Youth Advisory Council (more to come on that!), Next Gen Scholars, and New Horizons II are getting ready to take part in a hands-on, uniquely curated Freedom Ride across ten southern states. During their travels, they will gain a greater understanding of the civil rights movement and its profound influence on our society and culture. Coordinated by the Y School Partnerships team and the Teaching Artist Institute, the Freedom Ride will start in Washington DC and end in Kansas. During the ride, participants will learn from civil rights community leaders, visit museums and monuments that reflect milestones in the civil rights movement, and learn how to be community advocates. We can’t wait to follow their journey on social media and learn about this amazing experience.
These are just a few examples of the great stuff that is happening across the association, and it really only scratches the surface of all that Y associates are doing on a daily basis to make our community a stronger, healthier and more inclusive place for all.
Many thanks for making all this and more happen for the communities we serve. I am in awe.
Best,

Chip Warner
