Janet, The Y Swim Center in Randallstown
"I only attend the water fitness classes. I have gone in the morning and evening. They have all been wonderfully led. All the participants have been friendly and I feel very comfortable using the facilities. It is kept very clean. It seems like a nice community place as I see folks just hanging out in the lobby. We need more places like this in our communities."

OUR WORK TOGETHER

Dear Colleagues,

Associates in our Y family centers are working through a significant deal of organizational structure change amidst an encouraging surge of member utilization and the stress of hitting our January membership sales and retention goals. Lots of key leaders have moved into new positions, many associates’ supervisors have changed, and policies and work processes are evolving rapidly.

That’s a lot to handle all at once, and I fully recognize how challenging all that is.

All of this change is driven by a few key objectives: 1) to allow us to more effectively implement and carry out our new strategic plan, called All in on Community, which puts membership at the center of our work and compels us to reshape it so that it feels far more essential in people’s lives; 2) to drive a greater level of consistency in the membership experience across our association; 3) to be better organized to attract to Y membership parts of the community that we’ve historically been unfocused on, so that we can make our promise of being for all not just a slogan but a reality; and 4) to be able to put as many of our finite resources as possible as close to the actual member experience as possible.

It is understandable and very human to feel anxiety about this level of change. I get it. I’ve been around long enough to remember the last time we implemented this level of dramatic change, which was not long after I started in my role as CEO. Like now, we were struggling financially (for different reasons), and there was an awful lot of “hoping” that things would get better if we simply stuck to the way we’d always done things. Well, that wasn’t an option then, and it’s certainly not an option now. President John Kennedy once said that “Change is the law of life. And those who look only to the past or present are certain to miss the future.” I’d argue that the future can be an awful exciting place, but for that to be true, we can’t be afraid to embrace new strategies and new ways of doing things.

I believe very deeply in the power of this Y to transform our community, and I believe even more deeply in the ability of Y associates to adapt, lean in and lead us into an exciting new era here at the Y in Central Maryland. If we work together, focus on our mission and core values, we can and will achieve incredible things!

All the best,

John Hoey
