Introducing the Y's DEI Speaker Series

This exploration and clarification will help the Y fully utilize a multiethnic, pluralistic, and linguistically diverse workforce.
All Y associates are welcome to attend. Mark your calendars today! More details to follow.

Ellanorah, Y Chipmunks Preschool
“We truly had the most wonderful, MAGICAL preschool experience with both our children over the last five years. Even with Covid and interruptions that came along with it, the Chipmunks preschool and teachers were part of our family. CHERYL ROSENDAHL IS THE MOST special, incredible human to ever run a preschool program and we are so thankful to have had our two children be under her care and supervision. Her love, dedication and trustworthy nature is unlike anything I ever thought possible for my children. Thank you will never be enough."

OUR WORK TOGETHER
Dear Colleagues,
This past Friday, we celebrated the 81 New Horizons II students who completed our summer enrichment and workforce development program for students experiencing homelessness. Unfortunately, I had to miss the event, which is always one of my favorites during the year, given that it occurred at the same time as the memorial service (also a closing ceremony of sorts) for my and the Y’s long-time friend and generous supporter, Bruce Cleland, who passed away a year ago at the age of 72 after a long and valiant battle with an aggressive form of cancer. A staunch supporter of our mission, Bruce’s family foundation “The Orokawa Foundation” (named for his beloved Orokawa Bay near his family home in New Zealand) gave the lead gift enabling the building of the Orokawa Y in Towson.
Bruce wasn’t simply a benefactor, he was an active and passionate member of the Y who once told me that his support for us was about the fact that we are “for all.” He grew up fairly modestly in a small town in New Zealand which had a little Y, and he recognized at a young age the value that a Y can bring in knitting a community together.
Bruce had a very successful career in finance across several continents and countries, finally settling down in Towson when he moved here from the New York City area to serve as the CEO of the Campbell & Company, an innovative investment management firm. In typical Bruce fashion, he jumped into his new community with both feet, and joined his local Y for exercise, fellowship and the opportunity to connect with a diverse range of people. He found all of that at the old Towson Y, and we found a powerful force of nature and support.
For all of his material success in life, Bruce was a relentlessly down to earth person who would show up at a meeting in shorts and a tee-shirt, and then proceed to engage in the most fascinating conversation imaginable, covering a breathtaking range of topics. A friend of Bruce’s read a poem at his memorial called “Live Your Life” by Chief Tecumseh, a Shawnee chief and warrior who lived in the late 1700s/early 1800s. It definitely embodied Bruce’s unique way of walking through the world with grace, dignity and clear purpose; the very same qualities I see in the amazing Y New Horizons II students year after year.
The poem goes, in part, “Trouble no one about their religion; respect others in their view, and demand that they respect yours….. Seek to make your life long and its purpose in the service of your people…Always give a word of a sign of a salute when meeting or passing a friend, even a stranger, when in a lonely place. Show respect to all people and grovel to none. When you arrive in the morning, give thanks for the food and for the joy of living…”
I am not surprised that this poem was chosen to reflect the life of my friend Bruce Cleland. And, when I think about the Y New Horizons II students, I see these qualities of grace, humility and purpose reflected in them. Bruce cared deeply about young people who faced daunting challenges, and did an amazing amount to be helpful (while not ever wanting to be recognized for doing so).
All the best,

John Hoey
