OUR WORK TOGETHER
Dear Colleagues,
It’s my sense that we are living through what I’d call highly performative times. People and individuals are overly eager to “virtue signal” in the public domain that they are on the side of what’s right (or, more accurately, what’s perceived as “right” in the moment, by whomever they are looking to impress). The most recent example of this might be Walmart selling multi-colored “Pride ice cream,” apparently to show their support of the LGBTQ+ community during Pride month, while also selling as much product as possible. After every depressing mass shooting, some politicians are quick to offer their “thoughts and prayers” on social media rather than actually doing something concrete to reduce violence. A meaningless sentiment on social media is so much easier than summoning the political will to work across the political aisle to do something hard. Another obvious example is the propensity of certain people and/or organizations to change their social media profile picture to correspond with the “cause of the week,” as if that is the same as actually working to make change in the real world. There are lots of other examples I could site, but I think you get the picture.
Making real change in the world is very hard, as is making real change in any organization. Symbolic virtue-signaling is not something that I personally feel comfortable with, and as we all work very hard to become a more equitable, diverse and inclusive Y, I have to admit that you’re not likely to find me taking selfies and/or posting on social media glib phrases to signal that “I’m one of the good ones!” That’s not my style, nor does it bring credibility, in my view, to the seriousness with which we are taking this journey together. It’s an ongoing process of intentionality and requires a willingness to make change happen, when necessary. It requires vigilance and a belief that every one of us is better off for the richness which comes from living in and with a truly diverse, equitable and inclusive culture.
We all need to travel through this world as our authentic selves, and for me that means listening, reflecting, reading, sharing and focusing on the complicated stuff. Call me a nerd; call me what you will. That’s okay by me. I’m excited about the future, despite all of the challenges in front us, because I see so much deep-seated goodness and seriousness all around me. That’s better than any selfie or social media post.
All the best,

John Hoey
