LANGUAGE MATTERS
"You can register for childcare online."
"A YMCA staff member can help you with BASE."
"Non-members can register for aquatics."
HUH?! The sentences above break at least five Y Brand Standards. Do you know which ones?
Our brand is precious and requires everyone's attention and protection. Please take time to revisit THE HANDY LITTLE BRAND GUIDE for a reminder of fundamental do's and don'ts about our brand and language.
- We are the Y, the Y in Central Maryland, Y Preschool, the Y in Parkville, etc; not the YMCA (because we are open to all)
- We offer Preschool, Head Start, Stay & Play, Youth Development; not childcare (because the work we do with youth is important)
- We are associates; not staff (because we are collaborators)
- We have participants, guests, etc; not non-members (because we don't exclude or isolate people)
- Speak/spell things out in external communications (because no one knows what our acronyms mean but us!)
Your language matters and every word shapes the Y brand experience, for better or for worse.
Y ASSOCIATE SUMMER CAMP BENEFITS
Summer is coming! This means our Y centers and off-site locations will be flooded with happy, smiling camp kids all day long - including children of Y associates.
As part of your Y benefits, associates who work at least 20 hours a week can get 25-50% off of Y Camp!
To Qualify for an Associate Camp Discount
You must work at the Y in Central Maryland at least 20 hours per week and the child listed must be a legal dependent on your federal income tax return. If you meet both of these requirements, complete a Dependent Care Assistance Plan (DCAP) form and email it to HRIS@ymaryland.org for approval.
HRIS will verify employment and eligibility and will then forward your approved/denied form to Customer Service with the discount amount.
- Y Camp (all camps, inclusive of Specialty Camps, Teen Camps, Transportation, Overnight Camps and CIT Leadership Program) 25-50% off depending on salary.
- Salary below $53,000 receives 50% off and salary above $53,000 receives 25% off.

OUR WORK TOGETHER
Dear Colleagues,
I want to use this opportunity to thank you for your extraordinary patience, flexibility, and understanding as we’ve all navigated the seemingly unending shifts in policies that have been driven by the evolving public health environment. While we are doing our best to respond to all of these changes in requirements as an organization, I recognize the particular challenges so many of you have faced with managing all of this on the ground. You have had to exercise superb diplomacy skills, endless patience, and an authentic willingness to listen and respond to concerns. This is an extraordinarily difficult thing to do, but -- with legendary Y friendliness -- you have consistently risen to the occasion in the service of our communities.
The comment below which came through today on Listen 360 (one of MANY) says it all:
“The people who work at the Y are so wonderful and helpful. They are patient with my child and the facilities are always in great condition.”
I couldn’t agree more. On behalf of John Hoey (who is taking a well deserved day off) and our whole executive team, I wanted to say thank you. I am proud to be part of this fantastic team, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to work with and for each one of you.
All the best,

Chip Warner
Chief Operating Officer
The Y in Central Maryland
