Learn to Swim

Below is a list of core aquatic classes offered at the Y. Additional classes may be available. Classes vary by location. To see a complete list of what's available at your nearest Family Center Y, click here.

Parent/Child Lessons

(Parents must accompany child in the water)

Skipper (6 mos. – 3 yrs.)
Introduction to the water where the parent and child will enjoy water movements and games accompanied by songs. Basic skills will be developed using water toys and play. Parents are required to get in the water with thier child.

Minimum Requirements: Have little to no water experience

To Pass: Must be able to kick, do push-off's, scooping, and be comfortable on your back.

Perch (2 – 3 yrs.)
Children are taught to work more directly with an instructor in preparation for preschool lessons and will learn the skills of breath control, floating, kicking, paddling, and water entries. Parents are required to get in the water with their child.

Minimum Requirements: Have little water experience and be able to kick, do push-off's scooping, and be comfortable on your back.

To Pass: Must be able to swim 25 yards without the aid of the parent, but a float pack is allowed.

Preschool Lessons

Pike (3 – 5 yrs.)
This class will help the child develop safe pool behavior, adjust to the water and develop independent movement in the water with a float belt.

Minimum Requirements: Be able to participate in a group environment with an instructor. May be apprehensive about swimming independently without instructor's help.

To Pass: Must be comfortable with putting whole face in the water while blowing bubbles and swimming a front paddle stroke. 

Eel (3 – 5 yrs.)
Children are taught to sit dive, float, and perform the progressive paddle stroke.

Minimum Requirements: Must be able to swim 10 yards with or without a float belt independently with at least 2.5 yards without a float belt.

To Pass: Must be able to swim 25 yards with or without a float belt independently with at least 15 yards without a float belt.

Ray (3 – 5 yrs.)
Improve stroke skills, build endurance on your front and back, learn to tread water and perform kneeling dives.

Minimum Requirements: Must be able to swim 25 yards with or without a float belt independently with at least 15 yards without a float belt.

To Pass: Must be able to swim 25 yards without a float belt on your front,  back, and side independently.

Starfish (3 – 5 yrs.)
Endurance of front and back crawl, develop a modified breaststroke and butterfly, personal safety, and rescue skills.

Minimum Requirements: Must be able to swim 25 yards withouth a float belt on your front, back, and side independently.

To Pass: Must be able to swim 25 yards of front and back crawl and demonstrate a modified breaststroke and butterfly.

Youth Lessons

Polliwog (6 – 12 yrs.)
Basic skill instruction includes front paddle and flutter kick, breath control, floating, and horizontal body position.

Guppy (6 – 12 yrs.)
Develop front and back float and paddle stroke. Children are introduced to rotary breathing and front crawl.

Minnow (6 – 12 yrs.)
Introduction to back crawl, diving , treading water, and sharpening front crawl and rotary breathing.

Fish (6 – 12 yrs.)
New skills include the breaststroke and elementary backstroke.

Flying Fish (6 – 12 yrs.)
Build endurance and refine strokes. New skills include the butterfly and open turns.

Shark (6 – 12 yrs.)
Work on stroke technique and refinement, competitive turns and side stoke.

Teen/Adult Lessons

Teen/adult I (13 yrs. & up)
Introductory course for beginners.

Teen/adult II (13 yrs. & up)
Intermediate course for those who have mastered the basics.

Individual Swim Lessons

One-on-one swim instruction.
