John Hoey

President and Chief Executive Officer

John Hoey became the President and Chief Executive Officer of the Y of Central Maryland in July of 2006.  In this role, he oversees the growth and development of one of the 30 largest independent Y organizations in the United States.

Prior to arriving at the Y, Hoey spent 23 years in the private sector with growth-oriented publicly-traded companies.  He last served as President of Progressus Therapy, a division of Baltimore-based Educate, Inc.  Progressus Therapy is a leading national provider of school-based and early intervention special education services across the country.  Previously, he served in a variety of executive management positions at Laureate Education (formerly Sylvan Learning Systems).   His business experience includes key contributions to the start-up of Laureate's international higher education business, and an earlier eight-year stint in various domestic and international management assignments in consumer segments of Citigroup (formerly Citicorp).

Hoey has been actively engaged in the Greater Baltimore community for a long time, having served on the boards of many non-profit organizations, including The Family Tree (Maryland’s largest child abuse prevention organization), the National Aquarium in Baltimore and the Baltimore Workforce Investment Board.  He currently serves as a trustee and the treasurer of Second Presbyterian Church in Baltimore, chairs the Board of Visitors of the University of South Carolina's College of Arts & Sciences and serves on the Board of Advisors of USC's Honors College.

A native of New York, Hoey has lived in the Baltimore area since 1989.  He received an undergraduate degree in English Literature from the University of South Carolina's Honor College and earned his M.B.A. at the State University of New York.  Hoey resides in the Roland Park neighborhood of Baltimore with his wife, Holly, and son, Liam.
