Program Descriptions
21st Century Community Learning Centers
The Y, in partnership with Baltimore City Public Schools, provides comprehensive academic and enrichment programming for qualifying students enrolled at Raynor Browne and Robert Coleman Elementary Schools.
Black Achievers
An intentionally designed program following a national Y curriculum to help minority teens develop a positive sense of self and to set high education and career goals.  Individual academic instruction results in improved grades and test scores.  Students participate in SAT prep, scholarship/financial aid and admissions workshops, visit college campuses, and participate in community service projects. Adult mentors offer work-place tours and guide students in pursuing career goals.
BOOST Programs
These after school programs, offered in elementary, middle and high schools in Baltimore’s most challenged neighborhoods, have both educational and enrichment components.  The academic curriculum is taught by certified teachers and focuses heavily on reading, writing and math.  The Y works with multiple collaborators to provide the enrichment component of the program, including The Peabody, Clayworks, Port Discovery, and Chick Webb.

College Gardens

In partnership with the Macht Foundation, the Y operates a year round program for elementary, middle and high school youth who live in the College Garden community.  Two townhouses have been converted into a community center.  This program collaborates with the UMBC Shriver Center which provides service opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students to make an impact in the lives of young people.
Head Start
Head Start is a federally funded program which provides a comprehensive early intervention program to low-income pre-school age children and their families.  The goal of the program is to ensure that every child is school-ready and focuses largely on literacy.  The Y of Central Maryland is a delegate agency for Emily Price Jones, a Baltimore City Head Start program.  This program serves 321 children and their families in the most under-served communities of Baltimore.
Leaders Club
Sixth to twelfth graders plan community projects, host social activities, and provide peer support.  As trained volunteer aides, they receive first-time work experience in Y programs.
LIT: Leaders in Training Program
Teens looking for an opportunity to learn and gain job experience as summer camp counselors assist staff with daily camp activities.
New Horizons Day Camp I and II
The Y, Baltimore City Public Schools, Maryland Action for the Homeless and the Baltimore City Department of Housing and Community Development provide summer day camp and educational enrichment services to homeless youth and teens.  The program provides meals, trust and team building exercises, mental health services, academic support, career interest inventories, intensive instructions on job readiness, character education, and work experience. Youth enjoy supported job placements and receive a weekly stipend.
Physical Education & Fitness
The Carol White Grant provides the opportunity for 4 BCPS sites in southwest Baltimore City to participate in physical education and fitness during after-school hours.  The program blends on-site programming with weekly trips to the Druid Hill Y for swimming, dance and for karate classes

PreSchool and School Age Child Care Services
Traditional preschool and out-of-school child care services are available to working families.  These programs are licensed through Child Care Administration.  The Y participates in the Purchase of Care program and provides financial assistance.

SES: Supplemental Education Services
The Y has been approved by MSDE as an SES provider.  Services are currently being provided for eligible students attending General Wolfe and Westport Elementary Schools.
Summer Camp
A variety of summer camp options are available for youth; from traditional day camp to sports camps.
Super Kids Camp
In partnership with the Parks and People Foundation, the Y participates in Baltimore’s Super Kids Camp – a summer reading and literacy enrichment program.  This unique citywide program seeks to work with primary grade children who are behind in reading skills.  Mornings are spent in small group reading instruction and afternoons are designed to extend literacy experiences through enrichment.
Teen Night Events
Ys provide safe, fun alternatives to alcohol and drugs; concerts, dance parties and fitness clubs are just some of the activities run by teens for teens, with the help of Y staff.
Youth and Government
The program focuses on developing skills such as research, writing, debate and parliamentary procedure.  After months of preparation, students delve into the legislative process, write bills, and campaign among their peers.
Y-Scholars
In partnership with Waverly Middle School, the Y provides positive reinforcement to youth committed to school achievement. The program provides a focus on literacy with book clubs, research projects, etc.  Additional incentives include swimming, rock climbing, youth sports, and use of the computers.
