Y Journeys in Early Childhood Development focuses on the developmental and educational needs of the young child – with an emphasis on school-readiness and fun! Using the Core Knowledge Preschool Sequence, Y staff teach skills related to school-readiness as measured by the Maryland State Department of Education. Plus, the Y’s character development values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility are infused into everything we do.

The Y Journeys in Early Childhood Development curriculum is skills-based and involves the family as active partners in healthy growth and development. Working with parents, we prepare children to be successful by teaching them age-appropriate fundamentals.

• Reading - letter sounds, letter recognition, word families, rhyming words, opposite words, vowel sounds, reading/being read to aloud, book awareness, and more
• Writing - letter shapes, spacing, upper and lower case, punctuation, journaling daily experiences, library, and more
• Math - addition, subtraction, math facts, grouping, counting, other basic math concepts

Y Journeys believes in developing the whole child: spirit, mind and body. The development of critical social skills begins in the preschool years. For that, we not only focus on school-readiness, but social development as well.

• Circle/Small Group Time - name recognition, days of the week, months of the year, colors, shapes, games, dramatic play, educational songs, science, library, and more
• Health & Wellness - I Am Moving, I Am Learning; a preschool curriculum that teaches and reinforces academic skills through music and movement, daily outdoor play, swimming (where available), physical education, and more
• Arts & Humanities - replicating the work of the masters, finger painting, crafts, and more

Y Journeys in Early Childhood Development programs are located in Baltimore City and Baltimore, Carroll, Harford, and Howard Counties. Weekly summer preschool/programs are also available at Catonsville and Owen Brown. Call your nearest Y Journeys location for more information about the program.
