The Impact of the Y
PreschoolTraditional - The Y cares each day for more than 4,000 children at 81 childcare centers – nearly half from low-income homes. Programs are licensed annually by the State of Maryland. Seven of the preschool centers have initiated NAEYC Accreditation and the remaining programs are evaluated using the Y Quality Check. Parent feedback validates our commitment to quality.Head Start - The Y serves almost 1,000 economically disadvantaged preschool children and their families with comprehensive programming that includes education, health and nutrition and social services. Recent Federal Reviews by the Head Start Bureau indicated that these programs are strong and effective in helping children to enter school ready to learn and helping families to be self-sufficient.Youth ServicesSummer Programming - The Y brings almost 6,000 kids to day and resident camp each summer. Parents voted the Y #1 Summer Day Camp in Maryland Family Magazine. All Y camps are accredited through the American Camping Association (ACA), indicating that a camp has complied with up to 300 standards for health, safety and program quality.
The Y partners with Baltimore City Public Schools to provide the New Horizons Camp for nearly 100 homeless children and youth. For six weeks of the summer, a half day of academic support is complemented with a half day of recreation and cultural enrichment. Additionally, the Y participates in the Super Kids Program by infusing literacy into enrichment clubs. Assessments conducted before and after the programs indicate that youth have maintained or improved reading scores.Out-of-School Youth Programs - The Y has extensive programs for at-risk youth during critical after-school hours, reaching 3,500 children at more than 40 community outreach sites. We partner with local school systems, Safe & Sound, Local Management Boards, and community foundations to deliver programs tailored to meet specific needs. All programs meet or exceed the standards established by Safe and Sound.Teen Outreach - Prevention is the Y approach to supporting teens in today’s world. Six thousand teens develop leadership skills through programs like Y’s Yo! Baltimore, Urban Debate Team and Youth in Government held at the Capital every April.Special Populations
