Our History
The Y has been a community resource since 1853. The first Y facility built in the United States stood on Schroeder Street in West Baltimore. Today in Central Maryland, there are nine community branches, 17 Head Start centers, 81 child care centers, 40 before- and after-school centers and more than 50 community outreach centers that serve 150,000 men, women, teens and children.
The Y is one of the area’s largest not-for-profit human service providers and was featured on the Baltimore Business Journal’s list of top 100 Largest Private Sector Employers in the Baltimore Area in 2002. The Y employs 1,500 people in Central Maryland and benefits from the commitment of 1,832 volunteers.
