The Y has been a community resource since 1853. The first Y facility built in the United States stood on Schroeder Street in West Baltimore. Today in Central Maryland, there are 9 health and wellness centers, 2 aquatic centers, 17 Head Start centers, 8 preschool centers, 67 before- and after-school sites, 20 camp locations and more than 30 community outreach and Youth Asset Development program sites that serve 75,000 men, women, teens and children. The Y is a place for everyone. People of all races, ages, faiths, gender, abilities, and incomes are welcome.
The Y is one of the area’s largest not-for-profit human service providers and was featured on the Baltimore Business Journal’s top 100 largest employers in Central Maryland list in 2009 and was named by the Business Journal as the Largest Health & Wellness Provider in Central Maryland, 2009. The Y employs 1,700 people in Central Maryland and benefits from the commitment of over 700 volunteers.
Anyone who seeks participation in a Y program is afforded a Y experience, regardless of ability to pay. A full 33% of the Y’s budget goes to providing programs and services to people who otherwise could not afford to pay. This is accomplished annually with more than $11 million reinvested by the Y into scholarships and community outreach programs.
