The Y has a rich history of supporting children and families with resources, programs and expertise that strengthens communities. Additionally, the Y’s history of innovative programming has shaped many of today’s traditions. Here are a few facts about the Y that may enlighten you!
Did you know…
- The Y impacts over 140,000 lives each year throughout Central Maryland, inclusive of Baltimore City and Anne Arundel, Baltimore, Carroll, Harford, and Howard Counties.
- The Y is largest provider of licensed childcare in the state of Maryland offering preschool, enrichment before & after school and day camp programs.
- With over 66,000 members, the Y is the largest health & wellness provider in Central Maryland.
- Ninety-two of survey respondents in Central Maryland say that their “community is a better place because of the Y”.
- In 2010, 3,800 children had a Y camp experience; 12% (roughly 658 children) of whom received financial assistance to attend totaling over $104,000 awarded.
- In 2010, over $479,000 was awarded in financial assistance to children and families in need of quality preschool and before & after school enrichment services they otherwise couldn’t afford.
- The Y operates out of almost 100 sites around Central Maryland, most of which are in schools.
- The Y works to support families and communities in 124 countries worldwide.
- The Y is one of the top five most recognized symbols.
- Basketball originated at the Springfield Y in 1891.
- Volleyball was created by the Y in 1895.
- Softball was developed by a physical director in the Denver, Colorado Y.
- Racquetball originated at the Greenwich, Connecticut Y.
- Boy Scouts of America originated under Y leadership.
- Organized camping programs began at Y Camp Dudley, Westpom New York in 1885.
- Aerobics and Jazzercise originated in the Y.
- The Y was first to establish aquatic certification programs for Life Saving, Swimming and Aquatic Instruction.
- The Y joined with the YWCA, National Catholic Community Service, Jewish Welfare Board, Salvation Army, and Travelers Aid, forming the United Services Organiza tion (USO) in 1941.
